Walking in Oxford and Oxfordshire

Walking has always been a popular pastime in Oxford and Oxfordshire.  It's certainly the best way to explore the bustling streets and tranquil colleges of Oxford city centre, whether with an Official Blue/Green Badge guide or with one of the many guidebooks available online  or at the Oxford Visitor Information Centre.

Oxfordshire is ideal for walking - hilly enough to give attractive views, yet with flatter river-valley walks as a gentler option. It's dotted with attractive villages often boasting a welcoming village pub or tea shop. You're never far from civilisation here - even if you do lose your way occasionally. And the mild climate means Oxfordshire's an excellent walking destination - all year round.

You may enjoy a gentle stroll, not far from your car, or a longer walk, using public transport.  Our guidebooks cater for both requirements.

A host of long distance paths criss-cross the landscape - you can dip in and out of these.

Myriad walking groups thrive in Oxfordshire, walking both on weekdays and at weekends. Some are 'heavy duty' while others enjoy shorter, gentler outings. Many people belong to several!

And Oxfordshire County Council's Countryside Service are happy to help if you encounter a blocked or damaged path - or simply poor path signage Tel 01865 810226 email:countryside@oxfordshire.gov.uk
