Wallingford Castle, once a Norman stronghold for a town more important than Oxford, now lies in ruins while Broughton Castle near Banbury, featured in 'Shakespeare in Love', is still a family home. St George's Tower, with Saxon foundations, was for many years Oxford's prison; you can visit as part on the Oxford Unlocked tour.
